Poetry on Postcards (PoP) is an artistic endeavor and a kindness initiative to share the joy of poetry across the globe. Created by poet and author, Rayna Hutchison, PoP began its life as a moment’s reflection on poetry as an art form. An art form that only comes to life when a poem is read by another.
PoP captures that moment of connection between poet and reader, when the words become art. It is dedicated to those feelings that fill the heart at the knowledge that someone has taken the time to write a handwritten note and put it in the post. It is the smile and surprise at finding something in the mailbox, addressed just to you. It is an act of creativity and connection, shared by both the person who receives the postcard, and the poet who is now being read.
How does it work?
Poetry on Postcards is a simple concept. Visit our digital Post Office here, leave your postal address details, and wait for your postcard to arrive.
How much does it cost?
Nothing, but the time you will need to leave your details, and the time you take to check your letter box. There is no monetary cost for the postcard and no expectation of anything in return. If you would like to support PoP, please take a photo of yourself (or your favorite view) with the postcard in it and tag us on Instagram using our account name @poetryonpostcards when you post it your story or feed. You can also use the hashtag #poetryonpostcards or #teampop to help spread the word.
I would love a postcard. What do I do now?
Visit our digital Post Office here and leave your address details.
I would love to send a postcard to a friend. Can I?
We are happy to send a postcard to someone else who might enjoy receiving a post card. Please make sure that you have permission to send a postcard to this address first.
How many postcards are in each series?
Each series of postcards is strictly limited and each postcard is numbered. Once a series has finished, we will begin a new one. A series has between 3-6 different postcards and there are 50 of each.
A series has now finished and I haven’t received a postcard. Do I still get one?
Yes! Your name will be on the wait-list for the next series. As soon as the next series is released you will receive a postcard.
Can I sign up for more than one postcard?
Yes! Each series is limited and once a series has been sent out, no more will be produced. You can sign up as many times as you like.
Please note that we cannot guarantee that you will get one of each postcard in a series.
How often do you send postcards?
We send postcards one to two times per week depending on how many requests are received. Each postcard comes with a handwritten message from the PoP Team so thought and care is taken with every single request.
How long does it take for a postcard to arrive?
The postcards are sent from Auckland, New Zealand. Depending on where you are in the world this can take up to one month to arrive once they have been posted.
What a great idea! How can I submit a poem?
The next call for submissions will be 1 February 2020. The best way to stay up-to-date is to sign up for our newsletter or to follow us on Instagram. We strongly recommend that you sign up for a postcard first so that you understand the concept for your submission.
What can I do to support PoP?
There are many things you can do to support PoP. Follow our page on Instagram and share our posts to your story. Sign up for a postcard and then take a photo of it, tagging us when you post it. Tag your friends in the comment section of our posts and tell people about us. Enter your poetry when we have a call for submissions and encourage other poets, writers and creatives to enter too.
